What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is a 100% electronic system designed to process applications for permanent residence under 3 different Canadian immigration programs:
Express Entry is Canada’s flagship immigration system for skilled workers who want to become permanent residents. It’s a points-based system that selects candidates based on factors like age, education, work experience, and language skills.
Here’s a simplified overview of the Express Entry process:
1. Determine Eligibility
You must qualify under one of the following immigration programs:
Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
Federal Skilled Trades (FST)
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
You can check your eligibility using Canada’s Come to Canada tool.
2. Get Key Documents Ready
Before creating your Express Entry profile, you’ll need:
Language test results (IELTS/CELPIP for English, TEF/TCF for French)
Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) if your education was outside Canada
Passport
Work experience documents
3. Create Your Express Entry Profile
Submit your profile online through the IRCC website. You’ll be placed into a pool and ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
4. Improve Your CRS Score (If Needed)
If your score is low, you can:
Retake language tests
Gain more work experience
Complete additional education
Get a provincial nomination (via PNP)
Get a job offer from a Canadian employer
5. Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)
If your CRS score is among the highest in a draw, you’ll receive an ITA to apply for permanent residence.
6. Submit Your PR Application
You have 60 days to submit your complete application, including:
Police certificates
Medical exams
Proof of funds
Other supporting documents
7. Wait for a Decision
Processing usually takes 6 months or less. If approved, you’ll receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and can move to Canada.
